Are you doing genomic research involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people? For some the answer to this question is obvious; but for many in genomic health research the answer is not always clear, especially when undertaking population wide studies that can include incidental recruitment. Consultation with medical researcher’s about challenges and enablers to genomic research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people identified barriers around understanding the process of conducting a project as it relates to; (1) ethics, (2) consultation with communities, and  (3) administrative barriers. To support researchers in Queensland to engage in genomics research projects with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and communities we have developed a practical guideline. We undertook extensive consultation throughout Queensland with researchers, clinicians & health service providers, government officials and community leaders to develop the guidelines for researchers who wish to undertake research in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples. The guidelines is a document that comprises advice and recommendations for genomic researchers working with the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities of Queensland. Here we give an overview of the findings of this consultation process and the resulting guidelines.
